What is the GDPR and when is it coming?
The EU is introducing a regulation on 25th May 2018 – the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – to strengthen data protection for all citizens within the European Union. GDPR is good news for members. It makes it easier for you to access your personal information and control how it is used.
Why does the Credit Union collect and use my personal information?
There are a number of reasons why the Credit Union collects and uses your personal information:-
– to process your applications for products and services
– to help administer your account (s)
– to communicate with you e.g. providing notice of our AGM
– to ensure we provide you with the best service possible
– to meet our legal and regulatory obligations
– to make credit decisions when applying for a loan
What is a Data Privacy Notice?
A Data Privacy Notice is a document that every organisation who controls and processes personal information must make available. It provides detailed, but simple, explanations of how the Credit Union manages your personal information. Our updated version will be available on our website and in our office from 25th May 2018.
What are some of the key changes I will see as a member?
The GDPR will give you greater control over your personal information by setting out additional and more clearly defined privacy rights, which you can exercise. Rights for individuals under the GDPR include:-
– the right to be informed about the processing of your personal information
– the right to access personal information an organisation holds on you
– the right to have inaccuracies corrected
– the right to have information erased
– the right to object, including in relation to direct marketing
– the right to restrict processing
– the right to have your personal information sent directly to yourself or another organisation
Does the Credit Union share my personal information?
We sometimes need to share your personal information with trusted third parties who perform important functions for us. For example, we use third parties to help us address fraud, security or technical issues. We are also required to co-operate by law with Irish regulatory or enforcement bodies. We go into more detail about the reasons we share personal information in our Data Privacy Notice.
From time to time, we would like to make you aware of other products and services we offer which may be of interest to you. We can do this by using some of the personal information we hold about you. You have a right not to receive such information. You can make changes to your marketing preferences at any time by contacting us.
How secure and confidential is my personal information?
We use a variety of security technologies and procedures to help protect your personal information from unauthorised access, use or disclosure. The confidentiality and security of your personal information is extremely important to us and we put a strong emphasis on protecting it.
